Chapter 3 / 8
Scouting
On this page
Your Scout Cavalry is not just a fighting unit — it is your eyes on the map. In the Dark Age, information wins games. Scouting tells you where your own resources are, what your opponent is doing, and where they are weak. The single biggest beginner mistake is to ignore the scout or hand it to the computer.
Scout manually — never auto-scout
The auto-scout button sends your scout on a random wander that misses half the map and wastes the unit. Always control the scout yourself. It only takes a few clicks per minute, and those clicks are worth more than almost anything else you do early.
Step 1 — scout your own base first
Before you go anywhere near the enemy, find everything you can gather:
- 2 sheep right away, then the rest of your starting 2x2 block of sheep
- Both boars (you will lure them one at a time later)
- Your woodlines — the clumps of trees you will chop
- Your gold and stone mines
- Berries and any deer
Knowing exactly what you have lets you plan farms, mining camps, and lumber camps without wasting villager walking time.
Step 2 — scout the enemy
Once your own resources are mapped, push outward to find your opponent. Early on, look at their economy: where are their gold mines, woodlines, and hills? Knowing where the enemy gold sits tells you where to apply pressure later — cut them off from gold and their Castle Age army never arrives.
Later, scout their buildings and unit upgrades. The little +1 / +2 numbers on their units reveal which Blacksmith upgrades they bought, which tells you whether they are going archers, knights, or infantry — and how to counter them.
Use a control group
Bind your scout to a control group (press Ctrl+1 with it selected, then tap 1 to grab it any time). The rhythm is simple:
- Tap the control group to select the scout.
- Click a few new spots to reveal.
- Return to your economy — keep making villagers.
This way scouting costs you almost no attention away from your base.
Don’t feed your scout to the Town Center
A scout that wanders into the enemy Town Center gets shot for free and you lose your eyes for the rest of the early game. Instead, circle the enemy base in an orbit pattern — loop around the edge of their vision, peeking in without parking inside arrow range. Keep moving, gather the info, and pull back out.
The payoff
Good scouting answers three questions every game: What do I have? What is my opponent doing? Where are they weak? Answer those and every later decision — your build order, your walls, your army — gets easier.
