Chapter 5 / 8
Walling & Building Placement
On this page
Where you put your buildings is part of your economy. Good placement shortens villager walk time, protects your gatherers, and turns your military buildings into part of your defensive wall. Walls themselves are powerful — but only if you build them at the right moment.
Don’t wall too early
The biggest beginner mistake is walling in the Dark Age “to be safe.” Every villager you pull off resources to build a wall is a villager not gathering — and that delays your Feudal or Castle Age timing. Hit your timing first, then wall. A fast uptime with a half-open base beats a perfect wall that arrived two minutes late. Wall when you have a spare moment or when you actually see a threat, not out of reflex.
Use your military buildings as walls
Your Barracks, Archery Range, and Stable are large, sturdy buildings — use them as wall segments. Drop them in the gaps between trees, cliffs, and your existing walls so they plug holes for free. Even better, build them forward, closer to where your army will fight. Units spawn at the building, so a forward Range or Stable means your archers and knights reach the front line faster and reinforce a fight before it’s lost.
Economy building placement
Smart placement saves wood and walking time across the whole game.
| Building | Where to place it |
|---|---|
| Lumber Camp | Touching the largest cluster of trees, so you mine the wood line for as long as possible |
| Mill | On the berries (max adjacency), or near farms |
| Mining Camp | Leave a 1-tile gap from the gold/stone — the pile lasts long enough that you’ll station more than 4 villagers, and a gap fits them all |
| Farms | Tucked close to the Mill or Town Center so farmers walk a short distance |
For farms specifically: pack them tightly around your Town Center and Mill. Once you reach the 3rd row of farms, add a second Mill next to them so the new outer farms have a short drop-off point too.
The three kinds of walls
Not all walls do the same job. Match the wall to your situation:
- Resource walls — small walls around an exposed economy: your Lumber Camp, berries, or gold villagers. Cheap, fast, and they stop a few raiding scouts or archers from picking off vils.
- Small walls — common in team games. You don’t wall the whole map, just enough to keep your gold and key gatherers out of enemy archer range. Quick to build, low villager cost.
- Big walls — fully enclosing your base or claiming map control with a long wall. This trades your early aggression for safety: you give up poking the enemy in order to boom behind a hard shell. Strong on closed maps and when you want a greedy economy.
