Continuous Production & Lanchester's Law

Just as your Town Center should never idle a villager, your military buildings should never idle a unit. In a 1v1, the player who keeps every Barracks, Archery Range, and Stable producing non-stop ends up with more units on the field — and more units means more map control, more map control means a bigger economy, and the lead snowballs.

Never idle a production building

Once you commit to a unit, queue it forever. An idle Range for 60 seconds is one missing archer in the fight that decides who controls the gold. The discipline is the same as villager production: keep the queue full, keep the resources flowing.

The catch is that constant production has a cost. If your economy can’t feed the queue, the building idles anyway. So the real skill is balancing your villager distribution against how fast a building drains resources.

How many villagers to feed a building

A rough beginner rule for Feudal archers:

Archers cost wood and gold, so you split villagers across both. The ~3.5 on gold figure is the headline number: round it up to 4 so you run with a small surplus rather than starving the queue. If gold piles up, you have too many miners; if the building idles waiting for gold, you have too few.

Online “villagers required” calculators let you plug in a unit and a number of buildings and tell you exactly how many gatherers to put on each resource. Use one while learning — it builds the intuition fast.

Lanchester’s Square Law: why a small lead snowballs

Here is the math that makes continuous production so decisive. In an all-vs-all fight where every unit can hit any enemy, fighting strength scales with the square of the number of units, not just the count. This is Lanchester’s Square Law.

What it means in practice: a slightly bigger army doesn’t win by a slim margin — it wins with units to spare.

  • 10 vs 11 archers: the side of 11 wins with roughly 3 survivors, not 1.
  • Those 3 survivors roll into the next fight. Now it’s 10 vs 13, and the bigger side comes out with about 7 survivors.

Each engagement widens the gap. A two-unit edge becomes a three-unit win becomes a seven-unit win. This is exactly why the small things matter so much:

  • Idling 2–3 units by letting a building sit empty isn’t a rounding error — it can flip a fight.
  • Out-producing your opponent by even one unit per cycle compounds into a crushing advantage over a few minutes.

The takeaway

Continuous production and Lanchester’s Law are two sides of one idea: in this game, numbers compound. Keep every military building working, feed the queue with the right villager balance (start with ~4 on gold per Range), and never throw away units for free. A lead that looks tiny on paper becomes a won game on the battlefield.
